Mission Statement: It shall be the mission of the Stratham Historical Society, Inc., to promote the study of the prehistoric and the historic
past of Stratham, New Hampshire, and of communities and cultures related to that history. In promoting this study, the Society will encourage the collection,
preservation, documentation, exhibition and interpretation of genealogy, artifacts, documents, and any other materials or information that becomes available
to the Society. Research, exhibits, facilities, archives and programs will be used to inform and educate the public. The Society will foster
cooperation with other organizations, agencies, societies and professions having common interests and purpose.
Current News and Events:
Scholarships
- Winfield Foote Award for Academic Excellence, High School Seniors, $1,000.00
- Applicants must be graduating high school seniors from SAU 16. Stratham residents graduating from private schools outside the district
may also apply.
- Special consideration will be given to demonstrated proficiency in those areas that relate to the Stratham Historical Society's mission statement (i.e.,
Social Studies and History). SAU 16 students who have achieved academic success in the Plant and Animal Science course at the Seacoast School of
Technology are also encouraged to apply.
- The $1,000.00 award will be payable directly to an accredited college where the recipient has matriculated for the coming academic year.
Application Due Date: April 15, 2009. Awards will be made during Awards Night at the High School.
Submit with Application Form:
- Official high school transcript to include the first two terms of the senior year
- Two teacher recommendations
- Brief description of extracurricular activities (on application form)
- List of awards received (if any) during high school including the National Honor Society or other organizations reflecting academic excellence
- Brief description of volunteer or community service activities
- Brief description of any employment
- Essay of 300 words or less delineating the student's educational goals

- Winfield L. foote Award for Academic Excellence, Rising College Juniors and Seniors
- Applicants must be a legal resident of Stratham, Brentwood, East Kingston, Exeter, Kensington, or Newfields.
- Applicants must be entering their junior or senior year at an accredited four-year college or university.
- In case of a tie, Stratham residents will be given priority.
Application Due Date: Feb. 15, 2009.
Submit with Application Form:
- Official college transcript to include first semester of the current year
- Curriculum vitae
- Essay (500 words or less) discussing the applicant's professional goals
- Two recommendations from college/university faculty members in the student's major field of study

Winfield L. foote Award for Academic Excellence, Thesis/Dissertation Award for Graduate Students
Award Criteria: Proposals evaluated on the overall quality of organization and written expression, appropriateness of the research methods
to the research question, and the fit with the mission of the Stratham Historical Society. Priority given to:
- Topics specifically related to Stratham and Seacoast New Hampshire.
- Stratham residents of any accredited college.
Non-Stratham residents shall be limited to graduate students attending a New Hampshire college/university.
Application Due Date: March 1, 2009.

Carl Lindblade of the UNH Speakers Bureau is a lecturer in their department of Hospitality Management. For the past 40+ years,
he has operated 3 area 4-diamond hotels and resorts. This presentation will be a humorous look at NH from the time of King George II
to the present, highlighting Colonial Days and the NH political traditions and culture.
This program is co-hosted by the Wiggin Memorial Library.

Don’t miss this opportunity to learn the value and history of your family heirlooms and treasures. Highly respected
New England dealers will be available to give verbal appraisals for each item. In attendance will be experts in appraising a variety of antiques and collectibles
including: furniture, works of art, jewelry, military memorabilia, photographs, china, glass, etc. A photo of
large items may suffice for evaluation.
A fee will be charged. The proceeds of the day’s
event will go toward maintaining the Society’s collections and other related expenses. Ample parking is available.

ROBERT FROST’S NH RESCHEDULED
Professor David Watters, University of New Hampshire, will discuss the connection between Frost’s life in the New Hampshire towns of Derry,
Plymouth, and Franconia and some of his best-known poems in which he created an enduring image of this state’s
places and people.
The program, originally planned for March 9, was postponed due to inclement weather. We are pleased to reschedule
this very interesting topic for May 4. It is free and open to the public. There is ample parking available. Light
refreshments will be served.
