Stratham Heritage Commission

Volunteer Training, 9/26/09, Become a History Detective!

About the Heritage Commission:
The Stratham Heritage Commission is state-mandated to recognize, use, and protect our community's resources that are valued for their historic, cultural, aesthetic, or community significance. Members of the Commission participate in activities aimed at preserving the community character of our town. In particular, a database of Stratham's historic structures is being researched and compiled by members with the support of the town. Once gathered, this information will be organized into an historical survey useful to the Planning Board, Conservation Commission, Zoning Board and others interested in the role of our resources in defining and preserving our town's heritage. Additionally, the Commission continues to collect and verify veteran's names for engraving in the Veterans' Garden at the Stratham Hill Park.

We welcome new participants; join at any time during the year. Individuals interested in history or with database management expertise are invited to visit a meeting, write us c/o the Municipal Center (10 Bunker Hill Ave.) or contact the Commission at StrathamHeritage@live.com.

The Heritage Commission meets on the second Wednesday of the month at 5:30 p.m. at the Stratham Municipal Center. Meeting day is reassessed annually in September and, if appropriate, a new meeting day is determined to accommodate volunteers' schedules.

Become a History Detective and Participate in a Survey of Our Town’s Historic Resources

The Stratham Heritage Commission invites all residents to become involved in our upcoming survey of historical buildings and landmarks.

Learn how to become a history detective by attending a training session on Saturday, September 26, at the Stratham Volunteer Fire Department. You do not need to own a historic property to volunteer; all you need is interest in your town and in its history. Of course, if you do own such a property, this is an important invitation to you too.

The purpose of the training is to inform volunteers how to survey their own or others’ properties to provide a baseline of history for structures and landmarks in Stratham. Historic structures are those over 50 years old.

The day will begin with breakfast and registration at 8:30 AM. The introduction to historical survey, led by Mary Kate Ryan, NH State Survey Coordinator, will begin at 9 AM. Following a break for lunch we will, as time permits, practice our new skills on historic buildings in the town center. There is no charge for the training or meals.

Please reserve your spot by phone (778-7979) or email (strathamheritage@live.com).

We truly hope you will not only want to become a history detective but also that you will share a bit of your time building a historical record for generations to come. Below you will find a link to answers to frequently asked questions about this kind of volunteer work including how much time is involved, what you will do, where you will work and with whom.

Be part of the Stratham team! Join us on Saturday, September 26th at 8:30am for this important training session. Call or email to reserve a place, and please pass this information along to anyone you think may be interested. We thank you.
